GM Cristian Chirila
GM Ioan-Cristian Chirila was born in Bucharest, Romania in 1991. He was introduced to chess at the age of five by his father, and by the age of 13, took 9th place at the 2004 Romanian Men’s Chess Championship. As you would expect from such a fast learner, he dominated Romanian junior chess, both individually and in team events. In 2007, he won the World Youth Championship in the U/16 category.
Cristian graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2014 with a BA degree in Political Economy. He attended college on a chess scholarship, and the UTD team won the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championship three times (2010, 2011 and 2012). He is currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he is Head Coach of the Bay Area Chess Elite Team and works as an entrepreneur; owning a consulting firm that uses chess to help businesses solve organizational problems, and as a motivational speaker and entertainer to schools and other organizations.
